About Sunnybank

The "Heart" of the Dragon

The suburb of Sunnybank is located sixteen kilometres from Brisbane's central business district and covers an area of 4.4 squared kilometres. The land was originally inhabited by the Jagera Indigenous people more than twenty thousand years ago.

Due to Sunnybank's prime position, it became a farming area in the mid-nineteenth century known for its production of fruits and poultry. The name 'Sunnybank' was derived from a local farm, 'Sunnybrae,' which was owned by the Gillespies. The farming in Sunnybank and its neighbouring suburbs were a crucial development for the construction of local transport lines. These facilities were necessary for the transport of harvests to Queensland's markets and included the South Coast railway which was built in 1885, Beenleigh Road which cut through the centre of the suburb, and Logan Road which was built to the northeast.

This transport network was continuously being improved upon, drawing in development for the properties in Sunnybank and its surrounding areas. In the early parts of the twentieth century, Sunnybank's farmland was increasingly being given away to suburbia, mostly housing estates. In 1938, Brisbane's most popular tourist attraction opened. The Oasis had beautiful gardens, swimming pools and a mini zoo and created increasing traffic throughout the already developing suburb. The desire to live in or around Sunnybank saw the construction of the Sunnybank primary school and high school in 1959 and 1963 respectively.

Residential development continued throughout the years, especially with the construction of large shopping centres in the suburbs surrounding Sunnybank. These commercial hubs were built in Upper Mount Gravatt and Sunnybank Hills in 1970 and 1976 respectively. The present day suburb is reduced in size compared to all those years ago. During the 1980s, Sunnybank especially, was hit with an influx of Asian immigrants which eventually changed the whole look of the suburb in which we see today.
